"Capitanata Grand Tour" exhibition in Foggia by Michele Del Campo

poster exhibition Foggia ENGLISH: These two paintings, that form a diptych, will be exhibited in Foggia, a city close to San Nicandro, my home town in south Italy, where I grew up. The exhibition gathers the work of artists from that same region, although most of them now live in other cities or abroad. In "The Sleep" I wanted to paint a meaningful image to show the decay and the abandonment of my home land, and my region in general, Puglia, one of the most beautiful, but also among the poorest in Italy. When my family migrated to the richer north, in 1994, my area was still populated and liveful. Few years later I could hardly recognise it, there were so many abandoned houses, degradation, closed shops and recreational places and facilities, and so little youth had remained, I could find none of my old friends. The second painting of the diptych is called "Excavator", refers more to the other reality, the real-estate speculation, more witnessed in the cities and in the cost, in the same area.

the sleep, 40x40cm

Group exhibition in Madrid by Michele Del Campo

ansorena-exhibition-july-15 ENGLISH: Starting a new phase in Madrid, after several years away, I am so proud of exhibiting with a gallery that is new to me, but it is one that has always been the reference for the best Spanish realism: the Galería Ansorena. Jewellers, auction house and contemporary art gallery, Ansorena is a big name in the Madrid high society, from as far as 1845. There is no better way to start with a gallery than to be accompanied by such high level artists like Miguel Coronado, Alberto Martin Giraldo, Hugo Alonso and Bea Sarrias. Definitely not to be missed!

The birth of Fundación Arcilla, not just one more Foundation... by Michele Del Campo

fundacion arcilla artistas ENGLISH: Artists have always felt the need, in general, to create in the solitude of their studios, lost in their peculiar world and obsessed with that research of form and content that for many is their reason to live. Not even universities facilitate much the encounter and the exchange among talented artists, I still remember how I was feeling the necessity to isolate and work outside the classes in order to continue creating without meeting the harsh criticism of professors and peers, all too advocated towards the "conceptual" tendencies of an art form where manual skills are banned. This is why I had always found it difficult to meet talented representational painters, apart from some that worked in my same gallery, until the social media have helped us find each other and communicate. During the last 2 or 3 years, in fact, thanks to internet I have been able to meet up, dine and socialise with those painters that before I admired but I didn't think that it would be possible to get to know personally. That encounter among painters of a certain professional level is fundamental in order to create a spirit of group and to facilitate the exchange of ideas and information. Spain, a country still inmersed in a deep economical crisis, is the country to which I owe a big part of my formation and my professional development, and where there is a solid tradition of realist painting at the highest standard. But the crisis has actually favoured that connection among artists that now feel the need to find solutions all together, uniting forces and targets. The same traditional model of the art gallery as the only entity to affirm and strengthen the value of an artist has changed with the crisis, and the collective of artists today is more aware of their own responsibility in creating their own oportunities to exhibit and sell their work, especially after the closure of many important galleries all around Spain.

The idea for a Foundation that gather the most talented and famous artists in Spain was born from the valuable effort of some patrons and forward-looking artists and from the opportunities created by the new social media in internet. The artists will not only be painters or sculptors, and not only bound to the representational style, there will be also actors, musicians, poets, video artists, etc. This new association is called Fundación Arcilla and it officially opened its headquarters in a new building named "ArtEXpacio" with an exhibition of realist painting, to which I participated, last Thursday 11th June in Madrid, and it is already working towards national and international projects.

In the UK, where now I live, the artists that use traditional mediums have joined forces and formed exclusive societies since a very long time ago. Examples of societies are the Royal Society of Portrait Painters (RP), the New English Art Club (NEAC), the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (ROI), the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA), the Royal Watercolour Society (RWS), the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers (RE), the Pastel Society (PS), the Royal Society of Marine Artists (RSMA), the Society of Wildlife Artists (SWLA) and many more. Almost all of these societies have found in the central Mall Galleries their perfect space for exhibitions, promotional and didactic activities, taking turns to use the space. This way, the societies have succeeded to create a point of reference for all the people who love contemporary art in its traditional forms. The prospect that "ArtEXpacio" could become a sort of Spanish version of the Mall Galleries, seems finally real to me, and I am very proud to have been called to be part of this new reality with artists of very high level. As artist and co-founder Modesto Trigo said in his inaugural speech, the direction towards which the Foundation is bound depends on the will and the action of each of its members. It is certain that we all know each other now, we all share a sincere admiration for each other, and we share the same determination to cooperate and contribute to this wonderful project that will hopefully give visibility to the traditional art forms in their contemporary vision.

Also a big thank you to Collage Arts for all the work that they do to make this event a success. A painting demonstration by Michele Del Campo

michele-del-campo,-The-Reading,-150x200cm

ENGLISH: I started this painting in a 4 days demonstration in Art in Action, some of you who have visited the fair have seen it half-way through. As it always happens to me, when I don't finish a painting in one go I might take an incredibly long time to finish it, or I even abandon it. That is because I always find that I have more urgent paintings that I need to work on, or administrative work that cannot be delayed, and time always runs too quickly. But luckily I did go back to this painting!

The most special of UK art fairs by Michele Del Campo

ENGLISH: After my 2008 and 2009 participation, this year I had yet another wonderful experience at Art in Action. I am not amazed that so many people who spoke with me said that they saw me so far back as 5 or 6 years ago, in fact the public of this fair is very faithful and for sure people who come the first time are thinking about returning to repeat the experience. I found old friends artists or organizers from my previous participations, and i have met new great artists that now are new friends, with whom I have shared these beautiful and inspiring four-days of work in public, dinners and parties. Among the public I have to thank so much everyone who has had the patience to spend hours watching me painting, and especially someone that have bought a 4-days pass just to watch my demonstration each hour and each day, I was very flattered and I tried to give my best to pay it back showing all the aspects of my painting.

Demonstrating at Art in Action by Michele Del Campo

My demonstration at Art in Action in 2009 Art in Action, Thursday 17 - Sunday 20 July, Waterperry, Oxford

In just over one week time, I will be painting in the beautiful settings of Waterperry, Oxford, at one of the most enjoyable and inspiring art fair in the UK, Art in Action. I will be very pleased to discuss my work with visitors, and there will be several great artists in all disciplines doing the same. This art fair has a wonderful concept: a group of selected artists will set-up a temporary studio in several marquees dedicated to all disciplines of art, so visitors can enjoy a day or several days out scrutinizing at close distance how artists make their artworks. I hope that you will come along too!

A great experience at Patchings Art Festival by Michele Del Campo

michele del campo, patchings 2014

ENGLISH: Last week it was a great experience participating to Patchings Art Festival. The main peculiarity of the festival is that it shows artists creating their works in public and it gives visitors the chance to talk directly to them about it. It was my first participation to the event and it was so interesting to see such a diversity of styles and approaches to painting, but also to other disciplines. Certainly it was a feast for the visitors, and most of them were artists themselves, or amateur artists looking for inspiration, hints and tips. I started from scratch a big-size painting of 190x200cm, but I was chatting a lot and I did not advance too much, however we were there also to enjoy meeting and speaking with people. I am also very happy that my painting "Redhead" was awarded the Royal Talens Award and the Artist's Exhibition Award in the Patchings Open Art Competition.

For those who could not make it to Patchings, there is a very similar event, where I am also going to demonstrate, Art in Action, near Oxford, from 17-20 July. I look forward to seeing you there!

Patchings Art Festival by Michele Del Campo

c ENGLISH: In just 3 week's time, from 5 to 8 June, I am going to take part to a big and exciting event near Nottingham, called Patchings Art Festival. There I will be leaving my shyness apart to demonstrate my painting, during all four days, in front of the numerous visitors, and I will also exhibit some new works. If you have the chance to see the event, you will know that you can ask me anything about my technique, my inspiration and all that you can think abut. This fair, as well as the fair Art in Action, to which also I am participating as a demonstrator later on in July, is a unique opportunity to witness the making of works of art by excellent artists from many disciplines, and learn some tips and "secrets" that normally are confined to the four walls of an artist studio. Among the VIP artists are personalities like David Curtis and Ken Howard, it will be a very enriching experience to see them at work, although they will only demonstrate one day each.

"Consuming Desire" by Michele Del Campo

I was waiting to show this painting because I wanted to announce also the exhibition that will host it. However the event, a group exhibition in a public art institution in Shanghai, will take place later than I expected, around mid-2013, so I couldn't wait to show the result of so many sketches and studies, that you can see in previous posts in this blog.

The exhibition will be about globalization and this is one of my contributions to it. The title “Consuming Desire” has a double meaning, and the intention is to produce a metaphoric interpretation of the excess of consumerism. The rubbish dump represents what we leave behind, our ecological footprint. Although the cycle of extraction, production, distribution, consumption and disposal of our goods is having devastating impacts on our planet and our health, we are made believe that the level of development and civilization in a country is given by its ability to consume and irrational consumerism is fostered.

I have painted enraptured, naked people among the rubbish. Far from being disgusted, they wallow, agitate and contort, intoxicated by sensual pleasure.

There is still a chance to see some paintings from the series "Close Strangers", as they will be exhibited at the ArtLondon fair, stand Mark Jason Gallery from 7 to 11 October 2010. "Described last year by The Times as one of the most enjoyable modern art fairs, Art London has always been eclectic and cosmopolitan, combining blue chip historical and contemporary art with a friendly and relaxed atmosphere".
