Free workshop in Manchester with Winsor and Newton by Michele Del Campo

Fred-Aldous-Manchester-Workshop-flyer-800px-1 I am delighted to having been invited by Winsor & Newton to give an oil painting workshop in Manchester on Wednesday 3rd June! The best news for painters is: it's free to attend! Also, there will even be a goodie bag for all attendees. The workshop will take place in the Fred Aldous art store, and I will concentrate on how to achieve pure. clean mixes and how to create the effect of light also in the shadows.

This is the program of the workshop: after a brief presentation of art materials by Winsor and Newton, I will present my work and discuss my painting practice, followed by a painting demonstration. In the demonstration I will explain my use of the materials and my colour mixes step by step, and in the afternoon attendees will be able to try their hands on oils following my example in the demonstration.

I have been using Winsor & Newton Artist's Oils for many years now, and my choice to use them was dictated by comparing the results of empirical experiments that I did using several popular colour brands.

It is possible to book your place in the workshop by emailing: a.zinga@colart.co.uk

Summer Group Show in London by Michele Del Campo

SUMMER GROUP SHOW 90 PICCADILLY, W1J 7NF, LONDON

www.fineartslondon.co.uk

This week I am participating to a new group exhibition in London with Fine Arts London. After last week's exhibition in a pop-up space in South Kensington, this time the exhibition will take place in central Piccadilly. You can see the works on display from 27 May to 1 June, with the private view being on 28 May from 6-9pm. The other featured artists are: Alf Lohr, James Mylne, Kristian Schimdt, Max Zorn.

I leave you with some shots from the private view last week in South Kensington:

En plein air, a British struggle and passion by Michele Del Campo

_MG_9343 ENGLISH: Last Friday I had the pleasure to paint from life with Haidee-Jo Summers and Adebanji Alade, such a high level there, for a very enjoyable afternoon of work and chatting. We took a couple of models to the sides of a canal that didn't look as picturesque as we decided it to become on canvas, and that is the beauty of improvisation: you don't need to go too far away to find inspiration, any small spot with some interesting colour or pattern could become a nice background for the models, in fact this place was convenient for us because it is just outside of my studio building, The Chocolate Factory. Having grown up by the Mediterranean sea, I still find that England is too difficult a territory for en plein air painting, if one is looking for strong lighting contrasts coming from the direct sun and needs to work over more than one day with the same conditions. In fact the best thing to do in here seems to be either avoiding the ephemeral sun completely, in order to be able to work over several days with similar lighting conditions, or, in those lucky bright days, to leave everything aside and rush to do a painting in just one quick session. In this case we had a typical variable weather, with sun, wind and clouds alternating, a very difficult condition to capture. It was difficult also for the models, who stoically resisted most of the times the temptation to adapt their clothing to the abrupt changes of temperature. Nevertheless it is always fulfilling to paint from life outdoors, and England is perhaps still the homeland of the plein air painters, and those painters that sometimes we encounter in our Mediterranean countries working in the streets are especially foreigners, many Anglo-Saxons among them, of course!

Video of my painting process by Michele Del Campo

[embed]https://youtu.be/bDz80edEBng[/embed] ENGLISH: I have made available this quick time-lapse video that focuses on my painting process for the portrait of the redhead girl that appears in my painting "The Sunny Time". This portrait (the head and the hair of the girl) is the work that I did in one session, working "alla prima", while the painting was still wet. The effect is more fresh and spontaneous in comparison with the techniques applied on dry paint, where the painter needs to wait for the layer to dry first and advance at a slower pace. As you can see, I use almost always big brushes, also for the details, while I use a small brush only for the retouches in the hair. This allows me to focus on the painting as a whole instead of losing my attention in the details, as these are then created in the eye of the observer in any case.

"The Fall" project by Michele Del Campo

English: A few months ago I did a painting called "The Fall" with the intention of doing a small series. It represented an elegant woman falling from the bicycle, not hurt but deeply absorbed in her thoughts. This new painting, representing a girl who has fallen from jogging, is my second piece of the project. Her mobile phone with headphones attached are behind her on the floor and her run has come to a sudden stop. The characteristic of these "fallen people" is that their expression is almost indifferent to the circumstance of the fall, it is as if it doesn't really matter, but it is their inner world that is suddenly shaken and they become aware of themselves throughout the sudden breaking of a routine.

Part 2 of my "Figure Alla Prima" workshop by Michele Del Campo

Last weekend I gave Part 2 of my "Figure Alla Prima" workshop. It was a very enjoyable experience, moreover the participants came all from Part 1 of the same workshop and there was an air of familiarity. Under suggestion of the participants already in Part 1, I began each morning with a demonstration where I would explain in detail every colour mix and every brush stroke. In the afternoons the participants applied the knowledge acquired in the mornings under my supervision and help where needed. It was a big satisfaction for me to see that even painters with a wide experience in traditional methods of application of colour could become so familiar and find so useful my particular approach to colour mixing for maximum purity and vibrancy. _MG_7086

"The Butterfly" and my new workshop by Michele Del Campo

michele del campo the-butterfly ENGLISH: This is a painting that will be exhibited in the AAF Hong Kong art fair in May at the Mark Jason Gallery's stand. If you have been following my blog, you might have seen that I made part of this painting in a workshop demonstration in my studio three weeks ago. Not only I was painting this to explain my technique to painters participating in my workshop, but also they were painting it on their own canvases under my guidance. They have asked me a second part of the workshop to learn more and continue the painting, and the part 2 will be held in April. There will be a new workshop from 15 to 17 May, always in my studio, anyone interested in attending can get more information and buy a ticket here.

A great workshop in my studio by Michele Del Campo

_MG_5033-1 Yesterday was the last of my 3-day workshop "Figure Alla Prima" in my London studio. I enjoyed very much the experience and I am so happy that everybody was very enthusiastic with their experience too, in fact all of them are interested in attending future workshops or a part II of this same workshop. The available places were limited to only 5 painters, so they could be working on big canvases and get individual attention, and I had a great group of lovely people, mix of professional and amateur artists. It was a very peculiar workshop because I gave my students the task to do the same painting that I am doing, and they progressed alongside me watching my demonstrations, looking at my painting in progress and listening to my advises. I started every day demonstrating on my canvas, explaining in detail my methods and then letting my students do the same work under my constant guidance, demonstrating on their canvases too when it could be useful for a better understanding. I was very pleased at the end with the results

of each of them. I taught many aspects of my technique, but the highlights of my workshop, according to most of the painters, have been my teaching about colour mixing, colour theory to achieve clean and bright colours, and how to use the brushes to achieve all possible effects with very few touches. My next workshop will be from 15 to 17 May and it's already bookable here.

Article in The Artist magazine by Michele Del Campo

the-artist ENGLISH: In the April issue of The Artist Magazine I have a four-page article where I share my approach to painting. In it I describe each of my painting as a journey, exploring the possibilities in form of sketches, modifying and adapting my ideas along the way, experiencing reality and dealing with the creation of an image that reminds of reality but it is not purely taken from reality, even when painted from life. The magazine can be bought in kiosks or online here

The Chocolate and the Custard Factories...Artists studios by Michele Del Campo

the-chocolate-factory ENGLISH: I have been included in this video about The Chocolate Factory in London and The Custard Factory in Birmingham. These two buildings, former factories of, as their names says, chocolate and custard, have been converted into quality spaces for artists and creatives of all kind, with the advantages of its structure (high ceilings, very big windows, heavy duty lifts, big staircases for the passage of big paintings, etc.) Above all, they are, in theory, permanent spaces dedicated to foster creativity in the community and to sustain the arts. Other artists studios organizations around London in general have to struggle to find old buildings to convert into artists spaces, usually abandoned and in bad conditions, and further and further away from the city center. These organizations usually only obtain short-term leases of 4 to 7 years (many artists don't even get that time to stay when they arrive towards the end of the lease). Consequently the investment of these organizations in creating divided spaces to rent to artists is minimal and the maintenance too (although rents for artists remain high). Moreover, the lease in some cases can be ended sooner than established, as it happened in my previous studio in Soho (the lease was 5 years and we got to stay less than 4) with very few weeks of warning. Artists then live in the uncertainty of a transitory situation, having to move from one place to another when the lease ends, with all the difficulties of finding a new studio, being the demand for space far superior to the offer.

When I first came to The Chocolate Factory I was impressed by the level of service that we get, a permanent space with a reception, 24h security, free parking space, everyday cleaning of the common areas and facilities, central heating, a yearly Open Studios event, two restaurants and bars, free events like poetry readings, live music, exhibitions, video projections, theatre perfomances, etc... Perhaps these advantages that we have, compared with other artists studios around the city, justify the use of the old name of the building: it is in a way still like being in a chocolate factory!

My new studio at The Chocolate Factory, London

    The courtyard of the building

The reception and entrance to the studios

_MG_3607

I will teach "Figure Alla Prima" Workshop in my studio by Michele Del Campo

Being full-time artist: it's not just about painting! by Michele Del Campo

michele del campo, the apple tree, 121x121cm ENGLISH: Finally I have a professional photo of my first painting of 2015. I have been so busy with paper works and administrative tasks, so I haven't painted much in this beginning of the year. Many who don't work as artists perhaps don't realize how much work there is to do away from the canvas. Organizing travels, transports, competitions, professional photos to new work, keeping correspondence with emails and social media, newsletters, updating the website, writing articles or answering interviews, keeping the accountancy up-to-date, redesigning business cards after running out of them, giving a lot of thought and studying future paintings... Now I am organizing a painting workshop, learning to design posters, organizing the daily program, learning internet resources on how to offer easy online payments, etc.... All this, together with being a father of a 1,5 year old baby, but that is the biggest joy of my life and I consider every minute with her as a gift.

In the meanwhile I will publish the program of my 3-days workshop (6-8th March) soon in this blog, although if you want to have a preview of it already, you will find all relevant information by clicking here. Be alert if you are interested though, only 2 places remain available! And now, at 6pm, I am rushing to my studio and pick up the brushes again, can't wait!

A short video to show my "alla prima" painting technique by Michele Del Campo

http://youtu.be/a9aXolRJXBk ENGLISH: There is nothing better than a video to show the process of painting with oils. My technique is "alla prima", so I concentrate on a certain area of a painting and I finish it while it is still wet, generally in the same day. The video of this painting, "The Reading" (150x200cm), which I partially made during my demonstration in Art in Action, concentrates especially on the portraits of the two girls. I had no underlying drawing for these faces, but, as you will see, I represented them improvising directly in painting. This method allows me a more intuitive approach and a more personal interpretation. For a written account of the whole process you can read the Artists and Illustrators magazine, February 2015 issue.

My creative process in Artists And Illustrators magazine by Michele Del Campo

January issue A&I 2 ENGLISH: A few months ago Artists and Illustrators, one of the most popular art magazines in UK, commissioned me to write two articles about my whole creative process, from the development of the ideas through sketches and photos to the painting work on canvas. It was not an easy task, as my creative process can be quite complex, but I liked the idea of putting my experience into words and images for the readers. From there these two articles were born, published in the January and February issues. Both issues are now available.

February issue A&I

The New Year couldn't start with a better news! by Michele Del Campo

2014_AllMed_medallion_GP ENG: I was overjoyed as I got the news from the editor of The Artist's magazine, I have been chosen as The Grand Prize winner of the "All Media Art competition", which has seen the participation of more than 2.000 entries in 2014. There could not be a better start for a new creative year. I cannot tell much more for the time being because the official news will be given in The Artist's magazine in the July/August 2015 issue, but I wanted to share the news with those of you who follow my blog. For now, Happy New Year to everyone!
